Exo and NaviLens

Vallée-du-Richelieu, Repentigny and Mascouche sectors

In collaboration with NaviLens, exo is presently testing an innovative system of color codes allowing to inform and direct users by using visual and acoustic signals.

The NaviLens solution is available on all buses in the Repentigny and Vallée-du-Richelieu area, on all train cars operating on the Mascouche line, and in all 10 stations along the Mascouche line.

About the NaviLens app

With the NaviLens app, users with visual impairments have access to real-time information on bus and train schedules, as well as a safe path through stations with guidance on directions and available services.

They can get guided and simplified directions simply by scanning a color code. The app reads codes that transmit information in 36 languages up to 20 meters away.

The interface

The app’s interface is 100% user-friendly for visually impaired people.

The app offers the ability to scan codes, view a history, and save favorite codes to simplify future visits on our transit systems and facilities. Users can even add personal notes to a code in the app, for example, if they need more specific directions at a particular location.

The settings also allow users to adjust preferences such as enabling or disabling voice instructions, distance indication, speech rate, and much more.

Our Recommendations

We recommend the following best practices when using the NaviLens app:

  • Ensure the app is up to date to take advantage of all features.

  • Make sure the phone battery is fully charged. The app uses a considerable amount of battery power.

  • If possible, wear the phone around your neck with a strap to keep your hands free. Thanks to the wide scanning angle, the phone’s camera will still be able to detect QR codes even when worn around the neck.

Winner of several prizes, the NaviLens app has been successfully tested in New York, Madrid and Barcelona, for helping direct people in public transit.
